In 1941 the War Department acquired 1277 acres of land for an Air Corp training station. The goal was to stage training facilities as far as possible from population centers while being able to move personnel and equipment to combat zones quickly. They certainly succeeded here. Coolidge is six miles from the airport and remains a small farming community. The base changed hands at the end of WWII finally becoming the property of the City of Coolidge. Presently there is one main hanger and a number of smaller rental hangers. 2005 statistics indicate 17 operations per day. Remains of the WWII activity are still evident with rows of foundation, some of them, obviously, shower/restroom facilities. The base Swimming pool and changing room are still in place.
