In Kronach befindet sich auf dem Melchior-Otto-Platz die sog. Ehrensäule. Sie wurde von den Bildhauern Brenck und Schlehendorf aus Kulmbach errichtet. Vorangegangen war die Verleihung des neuen Stadtwappens an die Stadt Kronach, und zum Dank errichteten die Bürger 1654 dem Bamberger Fürstbischof zu Ehren diese Säule. Das darauf dargestellte Wappen ist der Stadt Kronach am 2.8.1651 von Fürstbischof Melchior Otto Voit von Salzburg (1642 bis 1653) als Privileg verliehen worden. Anlaß war die Tapferkeit der Bürger von Kronach, die die Stadt im Dreißigjährigen Krieg halten konnten. Trotz mehrfacher Belagerung durch schwedische Truppen konnte Kronach erfolgreich verteidigt werden. Die Stadt konnte dreimaliger Belagerung und viermaligem Ansturm trotzen.
