In May of 1946, A group of World War Veterans met with a VFW representative from Harrisburg, expressing an interest to establish a VFW Post in Berlin. Later that month, the group met with the Post in Somerset, the county seat in what was known as Collins' Drug Store. From this meeting, it was decided that the new post would be named in memory of Captain Robert J. Walker, who lost his life in a raid over France in World War II.
On May 31, 1946, a representative of the VFW came from Harrisburg to Berlin and instituted the post. The membership at that time numbered 41. There were two goals at the adjournment of the meeting that night, one was to increase membership and the other to its usefulness to its veterans, community, and state and national organizations.
Through the generosity of the local fire department, bingos were held, using their venue and equipment until the post could purchase its own. Later, other methods of fundraising followed, turkey raffles, carnivals and other various projects swelled the club's treasury. This made the club able to donate to other veterans' projects at home and across the country.
In November 1946 a ladies auxiliary was begun and they too raised funds for related causes. In 1949, both organizations began to participate in the Memorial Day and Armistice Day programs in Berlin.
In 1951, the club erected a memorial-stand in the IOOF Cemetery outside town.
In 1979, the Legion and VFW post constructed a new community veterans memorial in front of the Veterans' Home.
In 1988, a large hall was added to be used by both orgnanizations.
