In 1947, M.H. Stougaard, Huntsville nurseryman, suggested that Spur 94 be renamed Sam Houston Memorial Drive. Stougaard was responsible for the planting of many of the original purple crape myrtles located at Oakwood Cemetery.

M.H. Stougaard was born in 1884 and died in 1965. He is interred in the Adickes Addition of Oakwood Cemetery.
