Statement of Significance
The shop at 6A-8 Rundle Mall, Adelaide, built in circa 1880, is important for its distinctive facade, which is decorated with an eclectic mix of classically derived elements, including giant Corinthian order pilasters. The extensive use of large areas of glass on the upper facade is a departure from the typically domestic appearance of the upper floors of commercial buildings at this time. The high quality of its stuccoed decoration is of added interest. The building makes an important contribution to the character of Adelaide's major retail strip. (Criteria: F1 and E1)
Description
A three-storey masonry building with stuccoed detailing, situated in Adelaide's main retail precinct. The building has a shopfront at ground level and further retail space on the upper floors. The upper facade is decorated with eclectic but classically derived elements, including giant Corinthian order pilasters, which frame large windows. The stucco decoration used on the face of the building is of very high quality.
The dominant scale and detailing of the upper facade contributes to the character of the western entrance to Rundle Mall.
