[EN] "RWE bookcase in Wengerohr invites you to read and swap books
Encouraging people to read as they pass by. This is the idea behind the installation of public bookcases. The citizens of Wittlich can now also use such a cabinet thanks to the initiative of RWE Germany. It is located in the Wengerohr district next to the new youth and mayor's house and was opened on Monday, 22 September by Mayor Joachim Rodenkirch and Michael Arens, Head of the Trier region at RWE Germany. For the opening, children played a small recorder concert under the direction of theatre teacher Gaia Cartellieri Wengerohrer and filled the bookcase with books they had brought along. Books briefly presented by the artist could be received by the public, so that the idea of the bookcase was integrated into the vernissage. The principle of the bookcase is simple. If you discover an interesting book for yourself, you can take it with you. The book exchange also works the other way around: If you want to return a book, put it in the cupboard.
A beautiful picture book and an exciting thriller will quickly find new readers. On the enclosed bookmarks there is space for personal notes on the book. This form of informal literary exchange corresponds to the current "share economy": sharing with others what you no longer need. The bookcase is sponsored by Annette Münzel and the municipal library of Wittlich. You'll see what's right. The bookcase designed by Cologne architect Hans Jürgen Greve is 2.20 metres high and 60 centimetres wide, providing space for around 250 books.
"The RWE bookcase is a great offer for Wengerohr, Wittlich's largest district. The location in front of the new youth and community centre and directly on the Maare-Mosel cycle path promises to be very popular. I am sure that this will soon be a meeting place where people can talk," explained Mayor Rodenkirch. RWE municipal advisor Michael Arens said: "As a partner of the city of Wittlich, we do more than just look after the power grids. With the bookcase we want to contribute to the maintenance of the cultural infrastructure, which is not easy in a city like Wittlich, where language and reading promotion and reading are very important.""
