Highway 79 was the major route between Tucson and the mining communities of Globe and Superior when Phoenix was a collection of farms. It passes through Florence, site of the territorial prison. It still connects Tucson and Phoenix for those who wish to avoid the drudgery of Interstate 10. A portion of the highway has been designated the Pinal Pioneer Parkway. At either end of this designated section is a sign with the name. This gray colored marker is embedded in cement at the base of the sign. Stamped on the disk is Arizona D.O.T. Hwy Div, Rest, 1977, P&M Geodetic Survey. The disk is located approximately 39 feet west of the western edge of the highway in the raised planter at the base of the sign.
