Each WPA team operated locally and used construction materials common to the area, and we see variances as we travel throughout the state. This was the first culvert we had encountered that used sandstone bricks rather than concrete. The tunnel is approximately 3 ft. high and 5 ft. wide, and is made of large, red sandstone bricks. We have since seen another of this type in the area.
The WPA shield indicates that this culvert was constructed in 1937. No obvious creek could be seen nearby, and apparently this culvert protects these roadways from run-off from the local farmlands. The culvert carries water diagonally across the intersection from northwest to southeast. This is at the intersection of S. Broadway (S. Eastern) and Roller Coaster Road (also known as W. Triplett Road), (hence the name we used for this Waymark).
