É uma árvore de grandes dimensões que atinge 20 a 30 metros de altura (por vezes mais) e de folha caduca. O porte é geralmente imponente com um tronco espesso e uma copa semi-esférica, mais ou menos alongada. O tronco é liso nos primeiros dez-quinze anos, mas a casca rapidamente se fendilha criando linhas pouco profundas que, com o envelhecimento das árvores, faz com que o tronco mais pareça estar torcido.

As folhas verdes brilhantes, lanceoladas (em forma do bico de uma lança) e dentadas (com a margem das folhas com pequenos dentes) e estão dispostas alternadamente sobre os ramos. O comprimento é variável mas é comum atingirem os 20 cm de comprimento e mais de 5 cm de largura. Do pé das folhas saem durante um período variável entre Maio e Julho os amentilhos (cachos de flores amarelas) que parecem iluminar a árvore, razão porque em algumas zonas do país lhes chamam candeias. O forte odor destas flores atrai abelhas e outros insectos que, juntamente com o vento, transportam o pólen de umas árvores para outras. O desenvolvimento dos frutos dá-se no interior de um invólucro espinhoso - ouriço. Em cada ouriço desenvolvem-se normalmente três castanhas de forma cónica mais ou menos achatada. A partir do início de Outubro os ouriços abrem e libertam as castanhas que caem no chão.

It is a large tree that reaches 20 to 30 meters high (sometimes more) and deciduous. The bearing is usually imposing with a thick trunk and a semi-spherical crown, more or less elongated. The trunk is smooth for the first ten to fifteen years, but the bark is quickly cracked creating shallow lines that, with the aging of the trees, makes the trunk appear to be more twisted.

The bright green leaves, lanceolate (in the shape of a spear's beak) and toothed (with the margin of the leaves with small teeth) and are arranged alternately on the branches. The length is variable but it is common to reach 20 cm in length and more than 5 cm in width. From the foot of the leaves leaves during a variable period between May and July the lozenges (clusters of yellow flowers) that seem to illuminate the tree, reason why in some zones of the country they call them candeias. The strong odor of these flowers attracts bees and other insects that, along with the wind, transport the pollen from some trees to others. The development of the fruits takes place inside a spiny casing - hedgehog. In each hedgehole three chestnuts of a more or less flattened conical shape usually develop. From the beginning of October the hedgehogs open and release the nuts that fall on the ground.
