These caves are the most visited of limestone caves in Australia. It has more than 40 kilometres of multi-level passages, with over 300 entrances. There are eleven (11) illuminated caves open for show, but be prepared to pay a Price for that ($40+).
While the local indigenous inhabitants had used the caves for their home thousands of years, the European influence started as far back the 1840's with locals guiding interested persons to the caves.
It is a three hour drive from Sydney, and there are tourism companies that take coach tours from Sydney, or from Mt Victoria or Katoomba. No public transport runs there. The possible size of the groups that go through the guided tours vary from eight (8), in the Pool of Cerberus, to the Lucas Cave able to take 65 people/tour.
Check the Official Site, as sometimes there are sometimes concerts in the Cathedral Chamber, or Carols in the Caves (Grand Arch), to make the most of the acoustics.
You can also stay at the Heritage-listed Jenolan Caves House, built in 1898. [Profile photo]
