The 1902 Blaisdell Slow Sand Filter Washing Machine was invented by Hiram W. Blaisdell. It's primary use was to wash sand filters used to treat drinking water. The machine treated Colorado River muddy water. Blaisdell patented the machine, selling it across America.
The machines traversed steel tracks atop walls of filter basins. The washing chamber was lowered into a basin and the washing unit stirred the sand bed to dislodge sediment. The sediment was removed via suction pumps. The machine was controlled by an operator in a corrugated metal enclosure.
