"First Baptist had its start as a mission church of Mount Moriah Baptist in Smithfield, beginning in 1891.
The church was originally located across the street from its present location, constructed in 1899. The congregation wanted a basement for Sunday school rooms so a decision was made to dig a basement on a lot donated by H.C. Frick Co. and then move the entire wood-frame building across the street. The move occurred June 9, 1916.
A front with a steeple was added to the building as well as a back with an office and kitchen. red brick was added to the exterior and later additions for Sunday school rooms were made in 1960 and 1988.
The first pastor was the Rev. G.M. Riley, who was called on Sept. 16, 1917, and came from Upland, Pennsylvania.
“He was hired for $600 a year and remained here from 1917 to 1924,’’"
