Sam Houston
Whittling Site
General Sam Houston is credited with having
sat on this corner to whittle and tell stories to
groups of listeners who gather around him while
visiting a store operated at this location during
the years the Houston family lived in Huntsville -
1847-1853, 1855-1858, and 1862-1863. General Houston
often whittled small objects such as crosses, hearts,
decorative buttons, bobbins, miniature shuttles
used in tatting and making of lace.
He also carved small baskets from peach seeds.
Samples of these momentos, which he presented to
friends, and his whittling knife are at the Sam
Houston Memorial Museum.
