The circular concrete section you can see is only a portion of the whole gun emplacement. Underground there was also a shell store, a magazine where the explosives were kept, and a casualty room.
The collection of concrete tetrahedron tank barriers on the site was originally located at strategic beaches around Port Kembla and was put in place to stop heavy vehicles rolling up onto dry land.
Another form of defence was the steel netting that was strung across the harbour mouth between the two breakwaters to stop submarines and other craft from entering the harbour. It could be raised or lowered as directed from the Breakwater Battery Control Tower, so that the harbour could continue to be used by friendly ships.
