The new Pumping Station at Vollan in Ramsey where heavy rain caused problems. The Pumping Station which has been designed to pump effluent to the new Balladoole Waste Water Treatment Works.
A seal around a manhole cover on an outfall pipe failing during the heavy rain and resulted in partially treated effluent and storm water being sprayed into the sea. A spokeman for the Manx Utilities Authority confirmed however that the concentrations of effluent was so low that it posed no risk to the health of the public.
Prior to the new Pumping Station being built there was a large storage chammber buried 5m deep below Vollan which had been installed in the late 1880's as a key part of Ramsey's original sewage system. The storage chamber collected the towns effluent befor final disposal. The old Pumping Station pumped this untreated and unscreened effluent into the Irish Sea via an outfall pipe.
The new large storage tank now collects the town’s effluent which is pumped by the new Pumping Station to the new Balladoole Waste Water Treatment works for treatment. The treated water returns by gravity to Vollan where it is discharge by the outfall pipe into the Irish Sea.
