THE SUPREME COURT YEAR.
Statistics concerning the work of the Supreme Court during the year are not yet available, but the Judges, the members of the legal profession, and litigants who; found great difficulty in getting their cases listed, realize to the full tube extent of their work that has been performed. The Bench was altered, inasmuch as Mr. Justice Buchanan retired and Mr. Angas Parsons, ELC., was appointed to fill the vacancy. The services of Mr. Justice Gordon were not available to any material extent, for he was engaged for a consider able time on the famous wharfs arbitration case, which has easily furnished a record for the State in protracted legal proceedings. The work has been characterized by difficult, important, and long cases for, in addition to the arbitration referred to, there was the bearing of argument in connection with the action (involving over £1,000,000) against the Wheat Board for damage done to the accumulated stocks, the Kingston case, several will cases of importance, appeafis on criminal prosecutions, references from the Arbitration Court, and protracted civil and divorce lists. Of the latter not many were defended, but long proceedings before several Courts were the outcome of the petition for judicial separation in the Hyland case. Extra strain was imposed on all those engaged in that action owing to the fact that it was not listed until a fortnight before Christmas, and the presiding judge found it necessary to initiate night sessions. The difficulty the Judges have experienced in getting through their work is shown by the fact that there are quite a number of important cases now standing for judgment. At times delays have been occasioned owing to there not being sufficient Courts for the four Judges, and the congestion was most obvious when the High Court sittings took place in Adelaide. The Chamber work during the year has been particularly heavy, and the Judges have been fully occupied in this respect when not sitting in open Court.
Mr. Commissioner Mitchell has had a most strenuous time during the year owing to the many insolvency proceedings, and the congested state of the Local Court lists. So far as the latter are concerned the difficulties of coping with the cases were greatly increased by the inordinate length of some of the hearings. Comparatively trivial actions at times occupied three and four days, whereas the decisions would have been no different had they taken as many hours. The Commissioner, for a portion of the year, had the assistance of Mr. T. Ifewitson, S.M., and the honorary duties were always ready to take their share of the work. The President and Deputy-President of the Arbitration Court were called upon frequently to deal with matters affecting wages and conditions of labour in most of - the industries of the State.
