Be it known that all the names on this monument gave the ultimate sacrifice “To Keep Our Country A Land Of The Free.”

It was my original intention to highlight each of the men listed on this monument. The first name, Cecil G. Bethea, revealed a tale of courage. Unfortunately, for many of the names the search for information was not as successful. Therefore, I have only include the information I found for PFC Bethea.

Cecil G. Bethea died in France on October 9, 1918, at the age of 20. He is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Houston, TX

(From a scan of the original document, transcribed as it appears. Link below)

Bethea, Cecil G. , (deceased), 1495501, private first class, Company H, 143d Infantry, 35th Division.

French Croix de Guerre with gilt star, under Order No. 15.339 “D”, dated April 2, 1919, General Headquarters, French Armies of the East, with the following citation:

“During the combat of October 8, 1918 near St. Etienna he displayed great courage. He unhesitatingly went forward over open ground and contributed to the capture of several machine-gun nests as well as of numerous prisoners. Was killed at his post of combat.” (Next of kin: Mrs. J.F. Bethea, mother, La Porte, Texas)

Residence of Enlistment: La Porte, Texas.
