West Kootenay Animal Hospital was established in 1967 by Dr. Peter Morgenthaler. The original facility served the area for over three decades. In May of 1997 Drs. Rob and Elaine Klemmensen purchased West Kootenay Animal Hospital and quickly outgrew the original building. A new, modern Animal Hospital was constructed on the same property in the summer of 2007.
The West Kootenay Animal Hospital would have become a bookcrossing zone two years before the present building was in place. The book released was Where the red fern grows, by Wilson Rawls, on Friday, July 29, 2005. It was released into the free newspaper box by the mailboxes in front of the hospital.
