19 Uhr, gerade ist die Vereins-Hymne des 1. FC Köln verhallt, dann der Anpfiff. Die Kölner empfangen den englischen FC Arsenal zum Europa-League-Spiel im Rheinenergie-Stadion. Das Stadion bebt. Doch bis die Partei nach Uefa-Richtlinien laufen kann, ist viel passiert.
Vier Tage lang wurde im Stadion umgebaut, überklebt, montiert und organisiert. „Branding“ heißt das Herrichten des Stadions für den europaweiten Wettbewerb. Die Helfer sind beim Spiel nicht zu sehen – ähnlich wie bei einem Rock-Konzert bleiben sie im Hintergrund und helfen beim Ablauf. Sie sind die Stadion-Roadies.
30 Tonnen Material
„Es sind vor allem die vielen Details“, sagt ein Roadie. Die Uefa legt Wert darauf, dass sie im Hintergrund bleiben und nicht namentlich genannt werden. Er überklebt gerade einen Schriftzug der Rheinenergie in der Mixed Zone, also dort, wo Medien und Spieler aufeinandertreffen. Denn Werbung der Vereinssponsoren ist untersagt. Rund 600 Meter Uefa-Banner bringen die Roadies im Stadion an, die FC-Werbung verschwindet.
Die Signage-Crew, so heißt das siebenköpfige Roadie-Team, verteilt rund 30 Tonnen Material im Stadion. Und das zu jedem Spiel – europaweit. Ein Roadie sagt: „Manchmal fühlt es sich an wie ein Wanderzirkus.“
60 Helfer im Einsatz
Zwei Tage vor dem Spiel. Das Herzstück der Fans, die Südkurve, verwandelt sich. „Wir haben allein im Unterrang 3752 Stühle anbringen müssen“, erklärt Maximilian Arntz. „Dafür sind 60 Helfer im Einsatz, die Wellenbrecher und Zäune entfernen und die Stühle einbauen.“ Der Veranstaltungsleiter der Kölner Sportstätten kennt den Wanderzirkus. „Vom Aufwärmbereich für die Spieler bis zum Schnittmuster auf dem Rasen, fast alles ist durchreguliert.“
Der Fußball-Verband will so einen europaweiten Standard sicherstellen. Währenddessen arbeiten die Uefa-Roadies weiter am Branding des Stadions. Vom Hintergrund für TV-Interviews, über Schilder an den Kabinen im Uefa-Look bis zu Wegweisern für VIPs, ausgerüstet mit Kabelbinder, Klebeband und Lageplan verpassen die Roadies dem Stadion einen neuen Anstrich.
Abbau dauert zwei Tage
„Die Uefa hat eine klare Checkliste, aber die Zusammenarbeit läuft problemlos“, sagt auch FC-Pressesprecher Tobias Kaufmann. „Es sind die vermeintlichen Kleinigkeiten. Statt einer Flasche Wasser, auf der man Werbung lesen könnte, kriegt FC-Trainer Peter Stöger sein Wasser direkt im Glas“, so Kaufmann.
Nach 90 Minuten Fußball ist Vorstellung vorbei. Der Abbau dauert jedoch noch zwei Tage, doch die Handgriffe der Roadies sitzen. Denn schon bald macht der Wanderzirkus den nächsten Halt in Europa."

7 p.m., the club anthem of the 1st FC Cologne has just faded away, then the whistle blows. The Cologne team will welcome the English FC Arsenal to the Europa League match at the Rheinenergie Stadium. The stadium is shaking. But until the party can run according to Uefa guidelines, a lot has happened.
For four days the stadium was rebuilt, glued over, assembled and organised. "Branding" is the name of the stadium's preparation for the Europe-wide competition. The helpers are not to be seen during the game - similar to a rock concert they stay in the background and help with the process. They are the stadium roadies.
30 tons of material
"It's all the details," says one roadie. The Uefa attaches great importance to them remaining in the background and not being named. It is gluing over a lettering of the Rhine Energy in the mixed zone, i.e. where media and players meet. Because advertising of the club sponsors is forbidden. Around 600 meters of Uefa banners place the roadies in the stadium, the FC advertising disappears.
The signage crew, as the seven-man roadie team is called, distributes around 30 tons of material in the stadium. And this for every game - Europe-wide. A roadie says: "Sometimes it feels like a travelling circus."
60 helpers in action
Two days before the game. The heart of the fans, the south curve, is changing. "We had to install 3752 chairs in the lower tier alone," explains Maximilian Arntz. "There are 60 helpers on duty to remove the breakwaters and fences and install the chairs." The event manager of the Cologne sports facilities knows the travelling circus. "From the warm-up area for the players to the pattern on the lawn, almost everything is well regulated."
In this way, the football association wants to ensure a Europe-wide standard. Meanwhile, the Uefa roadies continue to work on the stadium branding. From backgrounds for TV interviews, signs on the cabins in Uefa look to signposts for VIPs, equipped with cable ties, adhesive tape and a map, the roadies give the stadium a new look.
Dismantling takes two days
"Uefa has a clear checklist, but the cooperation runs smoothly," says FC press spokesman Tobias Kaufmann. "It's the supposed trifles. Instead of a bottle of water on which one could read advertising, FC coach Peter Stöger gets his water directly in the glass", says Kaufmann.
After 90 minutes of football, the show is over. However, the dismantling still takes two days, but the roadies' work is done. For soon the travelling circus will make its next stop in Europe."
