This is one of the oldest churches of Macau, built around 1622, and the most important until today.

The original church built on this spot was made of wood and the temple we can see today here is from 1844-1850, built accordingly to a plan of the local architect Tomás de Aquino. In 1937 further works took place. Once upon the time, when a new Governor started his functions, a religious ceremony would take place here. It became cathedral in 1623.

It is part of the list of buildings which made the historical center of Macau an UNESCO World Heritage site.
