At 200' long and 100' wide the Cathedral of The Immaculate Conception, the largest in the Caribbean. The church was elevated to the status of a Minor Basilica on May 11, 1999 its centennial year.

The Cathedral of The Immaculate Conception replaces and older church at this site. The foundation of the present Cathedral was laid in 1894 and the cornerstone was laid by on April 8, 1894. By the middle of 1897 the church was mostly complete. On May 11, 1899 the church was solemnly blessed on the Feast of the Ascension.

In 1956 Castries became a separate diocese within the Province of Port-of-Spain and on May 5, 1957 Bishop Charles Gachet, F.M.I. was consecrated as the first Bishop of Castries. On December 12, 1974, St. Lucia was elevated to the status of Archdiocese and Bishop Patrick Webster, O.S.B.D.D., then Bishop of Grenada, was appointed the first Archbishop.
