De Waterpoort, ook Porta Regia of Coninckxpoort genoemd, werd opgericht in 1624 als een soort ereboog voor Filips IV van Spanje, zie opschrift aan de westzijde en als stadspoort, zie inscriptie aan de oostzijde. Zij verving het vroegere 'Maeyersgat' teneinde de Vlasmarkt en was als dusdanig ingebouwd aan de zijkanten. In 1883-84 naar aanleiding van de werken aan de Scheldekaaien, werd de poort verplaatst naar de ondertussen overkluisde Sint-Jansvliet, waar zij geheel vrij kwam te staan. In 1933, ingevolge de werken aan de Scheldetunnel, werd zij andermaal gedemonteerd om in 1936 heropgericht te worden op de Gillisplaats. In 1963-64 werd zij gereinigd. Het ontwerp van de poort wordt - waarschijnlijk terecht - toegeschreven aan P.P. Rubens; de namen van de vervaardigers van het gebeeldhouwde decor van de poort zijn bekend uit archiefstukken: het waren Huybrecht van den Eynde (1594-1661 of 1662) en Hans van Mildert (1585-1638).
Tweeledig bouwwerk met parement van witte natuursteen, verlevendigd met arduin en graniet. Oostzijde: rondbogige doorgang in bossage omlijsting van roze graniet, bekroond met gebogen gebroken fronton; in de wig: paneel met inscriptie waarboven wapenschild in drukke omlijsting met waterlijst en een klauwende leeuw aan weerszijden; een welig decor van vruchtenslingers, strikken en medaillon sluit de voorstelling af. Links en rechts, drie boven elkaar gestelde rechthoekige muuropeningen in diverse omlijstingen en afgedekt met fronton. Een brede platte lijst markeert de bouwlagen, een klassiek geprofileerde kroonlijst de skyline.
Westzijde: zwaar geblokte onderbouw geritmeerd door halfzuilen en pilasters, afgelijnd door een versterkte geprofileerde kroonlijst; hierboven: licht uitgeholde rondboognis met Neptunusbeeld omgeven door een klassiek entablement met vleugelstukken en driehoekig gebroken fronton. De later bijgebouwde zijgevels zijn het product van een - zij het ook smaakvolle - fantasie.

La Waterpoort, également appelée Porta Regia ou Coninckxpoort, a été fondée en 1624 comme une sorte d'arche d'honneur pour Philippe IV d'Espagne, voir inscription sur le côté ouest et comme porte de la ville, voir inscription sur le côté est. Elle a remplacé l'ancien «Maeyersgat» pour le Vlasmarkt et en tant que tel a été construit dans les côtés. En 1883-1884, à la suite des travaux sur les quais de l'Escaut, la porte fut déplacée vers le Sint-Jansvliet, désormais surpeuplé, où elle fut entièrement libre. En 1933, à la suite des travaux sur le tunnel de l'Escaut, il fut de nouveau démonté en 1936 pour être rétabli aux Gillisplaats. En 1963-64, il a été nettoyé. La conception de la porte est - probablement à juste titre - attribuée à P.P. Rubens; les noms des fabricants du décor sculpté de la porte sont connus à partir de dossiers: ils étaient Huybrecht van den Eynde (1594-1661 ou 1662) et Hans van Mildert (1585-1638).
Structure double avec parement de pierre naturelle blanche, agrémentée de pierre bleue et de granit. Côté est: passage à arcades rondes en charpente de granit rose, couronné d'un fronton cassé courbé; dans le coin: panneau avec inscription au-dessus de laquelle armoiries dans un cadre occupé avec cadre de l'eau et un lion griffes des deux côtés; un décor agréable de guirlandes de fruits, d'arcs et de médaillons clôt la performance. Gauche et droite, trois ouvertures rectangulaires superposées dans différents cadres et recouvertes de fronton. Un large cadre plat marque les couches de construction, une corniche profilée classique l'horizon.
Côté ouest: sous-structure fortement damée rimée par des demi-piliers et des pilastres, délimitée par une corniche profilée renforcée; ci-dessus: arche ronde légèrement évidée avec une statue de Neptune entourée d'une entablement classique avec des pièces d'aile et un fronton triangulaire cassé. Les parois latérales sont le produit d'un fantasme - quoique de bon goût.

The Waterpoort, also called Porta Regia or Coninckxpoort, was founded in 1624 as a sort of arch of honor for Philip IV of Spain, see inscription on the west side and as a city gate, see inscription on the east side. She replaced the former 'Maeyersgat' for the Vlasmarkt and as such was built into the sides. In 1883-84 following the works on the Scheldt quays, the gate was relocated to the Sint-Jansvliet, which was now overcrowded, where it was completely free. In 1933, as a result of the works on the Scheldt tunnel, it was again disassembled in 1936 to be re-established at the Gillisplaats. In 1963-64 it was cleaned. The design of the gate is - probably rightly - attributed to P.P. Twofold structure with parement of white natural stone, enlivened with bluestone and granite. East side: round-arched passage in bossage frame of pink granite, crowned with curved broken fronton; in the wedge: panel with inscription above which coat of arms in a busy frame with water frame and a clawing lion on both sides; a pleasing backdrop of fruit garlands, bows and medallions closes the performance. Left and right, three superimposed rectangular wall openings in various frames and covered with fronton. A broad flat frame marks the building layers, a classic profiled cornice the skyline.
West side: heavily checkered substructure rhymed by half pillars and pilasters, delineated by a reinforced profiled cornice; above: slightly hollowed round arch with Neptune statue surrounded by a classical entablement with wing pieces and triangular broken fronton. Lateral side walls are the product of a - albeit tasteful - fantasy.
