Die lebensgroße Statue des "Alten Fritz" von Josef Uphues ist eine Wiederholung des für die Siegesallee in Berlin geschaffenen Denkmals. Zur Eröffnung des neuen Emder Außenhafens wurde sie 1901 zusammen mit dem Denkmal für seinen Urgroßvater Friedrich Wilhelm am Rathaus aufgestellt. Beide Denkmale überstanden unbeschädigt den 2. Weltkrieg und wurden danach abgebaut und eingelagert. 1969 wurden sie, mehr als zehn Kilometer vom Zentrum Emdens entfernt, am Siel- und Schöpfwerk "an der Knock" erneut aufgestellt.

Friedrich II. oder Friedrich der Große (* 24. Januar 1712 in Berlin; † 17. August 1786 in Potsdam), volkstümlich der "Alte Fritz" genannt, war ab 1740 König in und ab 1772 König von Preußen und ab 1740 Kurfürst von Brandenburg.
Als am 25. Mai 1744 Carl Edzard, der letzte ostfriesische Fürst aus dem Hause Cirksena, kinderlos gestorben war, machte König Friedrich II. von Preußen sein Nachfolgerecht geltend, das in der zwei Monate zuvor geschlossenen Emder Konvention geregelt war. Er ließ Ostfriesland von Emden ausgehend besetzen und wurde neuer Fürst von Ostfriesland.
The life-size statue of "Old Fritz" by Josef Uphues is a repetition of the monument created for Siegesallee in Berlin. On occasion of the opening of the new Emder Außenhafen (Emden's outer harbour), it was set up at the town hall in 1901, together with the monument to his great-grandfather Friedrich Wilhelm. Both monuments survived World War II undamaged and were then dismantled and stored. In 1969 they were repositioned at the sluice- and pump-station "an der Knock", more than ten kilometres from the centre of Emden.

Friedrich II. or Frederick the Great (Friedrich der Große) (* January 24, 1712 in Berlin, † August 17, 1786 in Potsdam), popularly called the "Old Fritz", was from 1740 King in and from 1772 King of Prussia and from 1740 Elector of Brandenburg.
When on May 25, 1744 Carl Edzard, the last East Frisian prince from the house of Cirksena, died childless at the age of 28, King Frederick II of Prussia enforced his right of succession, which was regulated in the Emden Convention, which had been concluded two months earlier. He occupied Eastern Friesland starting in Emden and became the new Prince of East Frisia.
