Die lebensgroße Statue des "Großen Kurfürsten" von Fritz Schaper wurde zur Eröffnung des neuen Emder Außenhafens 1901 zusammen mit dem Denkmal für seinen Urenkel Friedrich II. am Rathaus aufgestellt. Beide Denkmale überstanden unbeschädigt den 2. Weltkrieg und wurden danach abgebaut und eingelagert. 1969 wurden sie, mehr als zehn Kilometer vom Zentrum Emdens entfernt, am Siel- und Schöpfwerk "an der Knock" erneut aufgestellt.

Friedrich Wilhelm von Brandenburg, genannt "der Große Kurfürst", (* 6. Februar 1620 in Cölln; † 29. April 1688 in Potsdam) aus dem Haus Hohenzollern war seit 1640 Markgraf von Brandenburg, Erzkämmerer und Kurfürst des Heiligen Römischen Reiches, Herzog in Preußen, Pommern und Kleve sowie Fürst in Minden und Halberstadt. Er legt den Grundstein für den Aufstiegs Preußens zu einem der führenden Mächte Europas. 1682 lässt er in Emden die brandenburgische Admiralität gründen und macht die Stadt und ihren Hafen zum Stützpunkt einer Handelskompanie für den Afrika- und Indienhandel.
The life-size statue of "the Great Elector" by Fritz Schaper was erected at the town hall on occasion of the opening of the new Emder Außenhafen (Emden's outer harbor) in 1901 along with the monument to his great-grandson Frederick II. Both monuments survived World War II undamaged and were then dismantled and stored. In 1969 they were repositioned at the sluice- and pump-station "an der Knock", more than ten kilometres from the centre of Emden.

Frederick William of Brandenburg, called "the Great Elector", (* February 6, 1620 in Cölln, † April 29, 1688 in Potsdam) from the House of Hohenzollern was since 1640 Margrave of Brandenburg, Archbishop and Elector of the Holy Roman Empire, Duke of Prussia, Pomerania and Cleves and Prince in Minden and Halberstadt. He lays the foundations for the rise of Prussia to one of the leading powers of Europe. In 1682 he establishes the Brandenburg Admiralty in Emden and makes the city and its harbour the base of a trading company for the Africa and India trade.
