The original Lady of the Assumption Church was built between 1788 and 1790. The Gothic style church was 90' long by 36' wide. A construction of a new church on the site began on March 27, 1951. The cornerstone was officially laid by Archbishop Ryan on November 11, 1951. By the end of 1952 the church was covered and Christmas and New years Day services were able to be held. By Palm Sunday 1953 the main work was completed and the new church began to be used regularly on Sundays. On November 9, 1953, Archbishop Ryan gave the solemn blessing of the new church. The interior of the new church is 60' wide by 147' long. Its clerestory walls are 32' high.
A fire in 1955 destroyed the spire of the belfry. By the end of 1956 a new level built of cut stones had been added to the belfry and a new bell was ordered. This new church was consecrated by Bishop Gachet on August 14, 1966.
The stamp is part of a Christmas set of 4 stamps and a souvenir sheet issued in November of 1983 depicting churches of St. Lucia.
