The most famous and visited place in Nordkapp, and from which it gets its name, is Cape North, a cape that is also a cliff 307 meters above sea level. It is known as the northernmost place in Europe, although it is not entirely true, as the nearby Knivskjellodden is 1500 meters further north, but it is only accessible on foot. Cabo Norte is an important tourist center; receives around 200 000 tourists throughout the year, the great majority during the summer. North Cape became a famous place when the English explorer Richard Chancellor surrounded it in 1553 during his attempt to find a sea route through the Northeast Passage.
