Die Grube Mühlenbach war aus wirtschaftlichen Gründen seit jeher mit den Defern Arenberg und Arzheim eng verbunden. Noch-heute leben in diesen Ortschaften viele Bergleute, die bis zur Stilllegung der Grube, im Jahre 1960, dort ihren Arbeitsplatz. hatten.
Gefördert wurden in der Grube Mühlenbach Blei-, Zink-, Kupfer-. und Mischerz.
Grube Mühlenbach und die Wasserversorgung von Arzheim
Die Grube spielte bei der Wasserversorg der umliegenden Dörfer eine bedeutsame Rolle. Arzheirn wurde ursprünglich von den Wintersborner Quellen im Wald mit Trinkwasser versorgt.
Bei dem Stollendurchbruch (Niverner Stollen) entstand ein Wassereinbruch, so dass den Arzheimern für Monate - im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes - das Wasser abgegraben wurde. Eine anschließende Vereinbarung zwischen der Stollberg Zink AG und der Gemeinde Arzheim sah vor, dass der Nieverner Stollen als Auffangbecken hergerichtet wurde und ein Pumpwerk das Wasser 250 Meter hoch in einen ßehälter „auf der Hehr" (ehemals Truppenübungsplatz) drückte. Hierdurch wurde die Wasserversorgung Arzheim wieder sichergestellt. Im Rhein-Lahn-Kreis werden heute noch einige Dörfer mit Wasser aus dem "Nievener Stollen" versorgt.
