This imposing building is home to the administration and Council Chambers for the County of Huron.
The County of Huron is largely agriculture in nature and forms part of "Ontario's West Coast". Miles and miles of sandy beaches separate land from Lake Ontario. Many historic small towns and villages dot the countryside, including Exeter, Clinton, Wingham, Bayfield and the County seat and largest town, Goderich.
Huron County is governed by County Council, which is made up of fifteen members from its nine area municipalities. Each municipality located within Huron County is represented at County Council by their elected representatives: Mayors or Reeves, Deputy Mayors and Deputy Reeves, along with additional Councillor Representatives, as determined by eligible voters. Each year, County Councillors appoint a Warden to act as its chairperson.
The building is also home to the County's judicial system. It was built in 1954 with Art Deco inspired architecture. It sits at the centre of The Square, a federally-designated Conservation District.
The original County Courthouse, an Italianate brick building of imposing scale, massing and elegance, served as a landmark and important symbol for the town and county administration for almost one hundred years. It was destroyed by fire.
