The Municipality of Hasting Highlands' main office is located in the picturesque crossroads of Maynooth.
The building contains the municipal government offices and Council Chambers and also the library. An Ontario Heritage Plaque that recognizes the colonization of this area in the 1800s can be found out front.
Hastings Highlands has a population of about 4,000 people. It was formed on January 1, 2001 when the former municipalities of the Township of Bangor, Wicklow and Township of McClure, Herschel and Monteagle amalgamated.
The original colonization road was meant to spur agricultural development but it didn't take settlers very long to realize that most of the land was of very poor quality for growing anything but trees. And so it became that the community grew up around the lumber industry. Today that is still the case along with tourism as the area is a mecca for city dwellers who want to find tranquility on the many lakes.
