Texte de la plaque

Monseigneur Joseph-Clovis K.-Laflamme, 1849-1910

Text of the Plaque: (Translation)

A man of science and a man of faith, Bishop Laflamme is considered the first French-Canadian geologist. Born in Saint-Anselme de Dorchester on September 19, 1849, he was ordained a priest in 1872 and received a doctorate in theology in 1873. From 1870 to 1909, Bishop Laflamme taught geology at Laval University, where he was secretary from 1884 to 1893, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts from 1891 to 1908 and the Rector from 1893 to 1899. He was the author of the first geology textbook written in French in Canada. Bishop Laflamme was a founding member of the Royal Society of Canada in 1882, president of the geology-biology section in 1887 and general president in 1891. He died on July 6, 1910 at the Séminaire de Québec. His disappearance gave rise to national mourning. The scientific community has honored its memory by naming its name in a postglacial sea, the Gulf of Laflamme, which covered the Lac Saint-Jean region about 10,000 years before today. This exceptional man deserves our recognition and his memory must remain strong in our national history.
