The Church of Balata is located in the eponymous district 7 kilometers from Fort de France, on the Morne Savon.

It is a curiosity because the monument is the exact but miniature replica of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Paris.

Its construction follows the influx of refugees on Fort de France and its surroundings in the months and years following the eruption of the Mountain Pelee and the destruction of Saint Pierre in 1902 ...

It was in 1915 that the decision was taken to build a church there. The first stone was laid in 1924 and the construction, entrusted to the architect Wuifflef, was completed a year later, on 9 August 1925.

The interior respects the plans of the Sacred Heart but the Cathedral of Martinique remains much more sober than its illustrious sister for the decoration and richness of the ornaments.
