Réalisée en 1842, la statue en bronze qui se dresse sur le parvis du Théâtre royal est l’œuvre du sculpteur Guillaume Geefs. Elle représente André-Ernest-Modeste Grétry (1741-1813), célèbre compositeur d’opéras et d’opéra-comique liégeois, reconnu comme le maître du genre en France durant la seconde moitié du XVIIIe siècle. Le cœur du compositeur a été placé dans une urne visible dans le socle de calcaire qui supporte sa statue.
Gemaakt in 1842, het bronzen standbeeld op het voorplein van het Koninklijk Theater is het werk van de beeldhouwer Guillaume Geefs. Zij vertegenwoordigt André-Ernest-Modeste Grétry (1741-1813), beroemde componist van opera's en komische opera van Luik, erkend als de meester van het genre in Frankrijk in de tweede helft van de achttiende eeuw. Het hart van de componist werd geplaatst in een zichtbare urn in de kalkstenen basis die zijn standbeeld ondersteunt.
Made in 1842, the bronze statue standing on the forecourt of the Royal Theater is the work of the sculptor Guillaume Geefs. She represents André-Ernest-Modeste Grétry (1741-1813), famous composer of operas and comic opera of Liège, recognized as the master of the genre in France during the second half of the eighteenth century. The heart of the composer was placed in a visible urn in the limestone base that supports his statue.
