One of the largest mostly continuous peatlands in southern Ontario, this area has a collection of low ridges that poke through a flat wetland system along the famous Canadian Shield. There are bog-rimmed ponds and lakeshores, open grassy bog mats, kettle bogs and shrubby heathlands.
Surrounding these habitats are upland forests of red oak, red maple, white pine, white birch and trembling aspen. Rare plants such as orchids, bladderworts and ‘Atlantic Coastal Plain’ species thrive here. The area is home to a variety of fish and wildlife, including elk, black bear, deer and moose.
There are approximately 25 unserviced boat-in campsites on Deerrock Lake. It is an offence to camp anywhere within the Deerrock Lake area of Elzevir Peatlands Conservation Reserve, other than at an identified campsite. Campsites are not maintained and users accept all risk and responsibility associated with their activities.
Elzevir Peatlands Conservation Reserve is designated by the Province of Ontario as a protected area approved through Ontario's Living Legacy. It is managed by Quinte Conservation.
