The Old Alton Chrtch and cemetery are all that is left of the pioneer community of Alton, founded in 1855 and now being encroached upon by and subsumed into suburban Denton.

The Old Alton Church was organized as the Hickory Creek Baptist Church in 1855. The current wooden sanctuary was built in 1904, and is still used in 2018 for weddings and weekly services.

From the Portal to Texas History, two photos and a newspaper article from the Denton Record-Chronicle newspaper dated 1955-1969 about the Old Alton Church: (visit link)

CHURCH MARKS 100TH YEAR

Denton, TEXAS -- April 25 [1955 - BMB] (AP) -- Old Alton Baptist Church near here will celebrate its 100th anniversary Sunday with an all-day meeting.

Alton church and cemetery are among the oldest in the state. Guests from all over Texas and other states are expected to attend the memorial services and dinner on the church grounds.

The church was organized in 1855 in the Murphy hotel and Alton as the Hickory Creek Baptist Church. The building was not erected until 1904 on land set aside in 1852 for the Alton Cemetery by James Madison Daugherty. Daugherty was buried in the cemetery in 1853.

There are many tombstones in the cemetery dating back 100 years and other unmarked graves of undetermined age.

Although the town of Alton passed from existence many years ago, people of the community have The church active. Sunday school services are conducted there each Sunday and church services are held once a month."
