This historical marker is a bronze plaque mounted on a slanted pedestal alongside a beautiful wood carving in the center of Norris Park. It reads:
Tahlequah Historical Highlights Northeastern Oklahoma State University Following destruction by fire in the Park Hill area south of Tahlequah, the Cherokee National Female Seminary was rebuilt in 1889 on the northern edge of Tahlequah. With its establishment, this historic institute of higher learning provided a cornerstone for the subsequent development of Tahlequah. Following statehood, the school and adjacent property were purchased by the state and renamed Northeastern State Normal School, later becoming Northeastern Oklahoma State University. As an anchor institution for the region, the university has provided education, employment, cultural influence and status for Tahlequah and its citizens.
