David G. Burnet - Homestead
Introduction
You are standing near the site of David and Hannah Burnett's home Oakland situated on what was once the 279 acre Burnett Homestead. The couple arrived here during the summer of 1831 after marrying in New Jersey. Just before making landfall, their charter ship, the Call, ran aground. Hannah's first taste of Texas came while trudging through knee-deep water to shore.
The Burnett's first rented the land then finally purchased it from Nathaniel Lynch. They named their home Oakland, and Hannah ran the homestead while David was away on state business. Unable to care for it on his own after Hannah's death in 1858, David leaseed the homestead and move to a friend's house in Galveston. Hannah and three of her four daughters are buried somewhere on the grounds, their grades are lost. David died on December 5, 1870, and is buried in Galveston Lakeview Cemetery.
