The pub, formerly the Trentham Hotel, was originally called the Roebuck Hotel after the Duke of Sutherland donated a statue of a roebuck to the hotel in 1865. The statue was located in front of the building and can be seen on photographs dated 1900 - 1940 at the following links. (

The present stag statue was designed by Harold Clayton and remade in 1950 by Trionite Ltd and resited to its present location on a plinth near the exit of the car park.
Today it looks a bit worse for wear with one antler missing.
