[EN] "Demolition: Josef Nonn, former head of the building department remembers

Josef Nonn was head of the construction department when the Weissheim malt factory was demolished. Born in Andernach, this was also a moving development for him in his private life. Until then, the malting plant had played a major role in shaping the cityscape and attitude to life - not least through the two silo towers erected in the 1950s. Nonn remembers:"When you came back to town from your holiday, it smelled like roasted malt. It was a piece of home. Some said it stank." He considers the demolition to be significant:"This was the chance to finally make a difference in urban planning." In addition, the question arose: What is the history underneath the factory? For the member of the Andernach Historical Society, this is an exciting event. Nonn was hoping the city would find an investor quickly. Today he says,"You can't always leave it as it is." A hotel would be great. "But when the market is empty, you have to focus your power on other things,"he advises."
