Bronze "Doughboy" elevated on base composed of native pink and gray granite.
Built near site of first county jail on southeast corner of courthouse square. Erected by Shakespeare Club of Llano to commemorate 17 Llano County men who died during war. The $2,000 cost was funded by a county-wide fundraiser. At 1918 unveiling. Mayor Roy B. Inks officiated while Governor Dan Moody gave keynote address.
The statue was designed by nationally renowned sculptor Frank Teich (1856-1939). Trained in the German city of Nurnberg, Teich immigrated to the U.S. in 1878. In 1883 he served as a foreman of the granite crews at Austin's new State Capitol Building. Teich is said to have cut and polished the first granite column used on the Capitol. Also in 1883, he produced columns for the San Antonio National Bank Building and City Hall. He designed and carved many memorials throughout the nation, including the Sam Houston memorial in Houston, Mahneke Memorial at Brackenridge Park in San Antonio, and Masonic memorials at Kansas City, Topeka and Philadelphia. In 1900 established Teich Memorial Works near Llano, also called "Teichville" which by 1910 was Texas' largest quarry and polishing plant.
