"A first church of St. Andrew is mentioned in a charter dated 1020, but there is no longer any vestige. The construction of the current sanctuary is undertaken in the twelfth century, an era marked by an exceptional flourishing of religious architecture. Many churches are built or rebuilt in order to respond to the growth of the population and, consequently, the number of believers. The early church seems to have been a relatively modest building adjoining the Earl Taillefer's palace

Seriously damaged during the Hundred Years War, a major modernization campaign was implemented in the second half of the fifteenth century. In its eastern part, the single vessel is joined two side aisles, several chapels are built (remain those of Boissot and De Paris), and crossed ogives are posed

Victim of new depredations at the time of the wars of religion, especially during the taking of the city by the troops of Coligny in 1568, it is restored from 1585. The restoration of the vaults (inspired Plantagenet style) intervenes in from 1653 (year of the signing of the masonry contract between Jean Thomas des Bertonnières, parish priest of Saint-André, and Jean Ancelin, architect). Work progresses slowly, and the Romanesque vaults of the nave are not raised until March 1668, a century after their destruction.

In 1825, Paul Abadie Sr. builds a new facade, in a severe inspired style, like many of his works (Angoulême court house, Saint-Jacques church of Houmeau, Beaulieu hospital, Guez-de-Balzac high school) by ancient art. "
