We're going to guess that this "Then" photo was taken shortly after construction of the Green Block. Notice all the "good ole boys" hanging out in front, all of whom way have lived in the European Hotel upstairs. We notice that all the original tenants of the building were still in place when the photo was taken. Both photos were taken from Main Street, looking straight south.
Built in 1909 by concrete block manufacturer Andrew Green, the Green Block was built as a retail space on the ground floor and hotel, the European Hotel, on the upper floor. The ground floor was divided into two halves, originally housing a grocery store, the Lewistown Grocery Company, on one side and a butcher shop, the Lewistown Meat Company, in the other half, making the building a "one stop shopping" food store.
Owner Andrew Green's main business was the manufacture of pressed concrete blocks which replicated stone blocks. Possibly this building served a twofold purpose, those of investment property and advertising medium, as he built the building using his "rock face" blocks.
Though the Green Block housed a furniture store in 1984, today the only sign on the building advertises,
Lewistown Hoppers, a fitness centre.
