The National Capital Commission (NCC) maintains waypoint signs throughout the Greenbelt, a natural area which surrounds the city of Ottawa. The waypoints mark trail intersections. The signs include geographic co-ordinates and a map of other waypoints.
Back in the early '90s, before Highway 416 and the enclosed dog park, the road-like trail at this waymark was part of the Rideau Trail, a hiking trail extending from Ottawa to Kingston. At that time, the Rideau Trail Association assisted with trail maintenance. The Rideau Trail has since been rerouted.
The term Bruce Pit often refers to the enclosed dog park. There is a gated entrance to the dog park nearby. Bruce Pit actually refers to the former gravel pit, north of the dog park. The slopes southwest of the Bruce Pit are used for sledding in the winter.
From intersection 29 B, hikers can take trail #29 north and travel around the natural area that was once a gravel pit. The wider trail follows the outside of the perimeter fence to the dog park.
Before the dog park was created, the original trail #29 system went through that area. Because hikers no longer travel through the dog park, the NCC no longer maintains the trail system within the dog park. Trail users can now hike through the natural area without visiting the dogs, if they so desire.
