[EN] "The chapel St. Michael in Andernach in the district of Mayen-Koblenz in the north of Rhineland-Palatinate was built in 1210/20.
The chapel belongs to the Catholic community of St. Albert and is surrounded by the schoolyard of the secondary school plus St. Thomas.
The St. Michael's Chapel was built in 1210/20 as a cemetery chapel of the former Augustiner-Chorfrauen-Stiftes Unser Liebe Frau vor den Mauern zu St. Thomas (named after St. Thomas Becket), before 1482 Unsere Liebe Frau vor den Mauern / St. Maria.
During the restoration of 1853-54, numerous stacked coffins with female corpses were found in vaults when the flooring was removed. When the mental institution St. Thomas was established, cells were built into the chapel. This was reversed after some time and thus the chapel was given its actual purpose as a church.
While the interior of the chapel has been altered, the exterior of the late Romanesque tuff block building shows all the characteristic stylistic elements of its time to perfection. The slender building impresses with its structure with cloverleaf arcades in the basement and with blind arches and columns on the upper floor.
The construction as a two-storey chapel with an ossuary in the basement is unique in Europe".
