Seit mehr als 30 Jahren werden bei Alfter-Witterschlick in einem Tagebau Quarzsand, Quarzkies und Quarzedelsplitt abgebaut und aufbereitet. Die fast weißen Sande und Steine werden hauptsächlich in der Stahlindustrie, zur Herstellung von Beton, im Garten- und Landschaftsbau sowie für den Sportanlagenbau eingesetzt.

Die Größe des Tagebaus beträgt etwa 45 Hektar, ein Teil der Grube ist geflutet und stellt einen See dar. Als Ausgleichsmaßnahme für die zerstörte Natur ist der Betreiber verpflichtet, entsprechend große Flächen in der Umgebung aufzuforsten und andere Maßnahmen zum Schutz der Flora und Fauna durchzuführen. Ein besonderes Augenmerk wird dabei auf den Amphibienschutz gelegt. Eine Informationstafel am Rande des Tagebaus informiert über diese Maßnahmen.

Der Tagebau ist für die Öffentlichkeit nicht zugänglich. Es führt aber eine öffentliche Straße (Schmale Allee) mit Fuß- und Radweg an der Grube und am Eingang des Tagebaus vorbei, von der man einen guten Einblick in die Grube und auf die Aufbereitungsanlagen hat. Führungen gibt es meines Wissens leider nicht.
For more than 30 years, quartz sand, quartz gravel and quartz chippings have been mined and processed in an open-pit mine near Alfter-Witterschlick. The almost white sands and stones are mainly used in the steel industry, for the production of concrete, in gardening and landscaping as well as for sports facilities.

The size of the quarry is about 45 hectares, part of the pit is flooded and represents a lake. As compensation for the destroyed nature, the operator is obliged to reforest accordingly large areas in the area and perform other measures to protect the flora and fauna. Special attention is paid to amphibian protection. An information panel on the edge of the quarry informs about these measures.

The quarry is not accessible to the public. But there is a public road (Schmale Allee) with foot and bike path along the pit and past the entrance of the quarry, from which one has a good view of the pit and the processing facilities. Unfortunately, there are no guided tours to my knowledge.
