With several rivers, and many creeks emptying into Lake Macquarie, the local government wanted to be a step of potential floods, and monitors the lake level here and at Belmont, in comparison with the ocean, and the exit of Lake Macquarie at Swansea.
As a lot of Lake Macquarie has been mined beneath for coal, there are instances of sections of Lake Macquarie subsiding, and a years worth of data had to be discarded, until the Marmong Point Recorder could be re-calibrated. [ex PDF document, from: (

A couple of hundred metres away is a Trigonometric Station, which along with about 20 around the edge of Lake Macquarie, are used to monitor the shape of the shore of Lake Macquarie - most of which are within metres of the edge of the lake.
