The town of Vila Real de Santo António is the easternmost town on the south coast of Portugal. It was laid out on a grid system in the 1770s after an earthquake and tsunami had caused widespread damage in Portugal.
The town is laid out facing the River Guadiana which forms the border between Spain and Portygal. A promenade and garden area runs alongside the river and many insect sculptures have been placed in the gardens.
This butterfly is at the base of a tree with its wings outstretched. Its wings have a white base and the top two have orange and blue makings whilst the bottom pair have black markings. It is near the middle of the gardens.
