The map is mounted on a column that is roughly two and a half metres in height and about 50 cm in width. The thin column has maps and information on both sides. The column is divided into five sections and, from top to bottom, they are:

1. Name of the location of the map with direction arrows to nearby places of interest, for example transport interchanges.
2. A map covering the city centre of Birmingham that eqautes to a walking distance of about 15 minutes from the centre of the map.
3. A larger scale map showing the immediate area that equates to a walking distance of about five minutes.
4. A list of destinations and streets within a 15 minute walk of the map centre.
5. Blank.

The map is orientated 'head-up' so that anything above the YAH position is ahead of the observer. The map is overlaid with a grid that has letters running across from left to right and numbers running vertically from top to bottom. The letters are common to both maps with the numbers increasing from the top map to bottom map.

The "you are here" location is shown as a brown circle with the letter "i" within it and the words "you are here" next to it in a brown box. The lettering is white in both cases.

Streets are shown in white with their names being indicated in grey text. Buildings that are predominantly for office use are indicated in grey with shopping areas indicated in a fawn colour. Major buildings, such as the cathedral, are shown in 3D perspective. Park type areas are coloured green.

The map has a number of icons that display the usual useful information such as: toilets, bus stops, train stations, parking locations, cafes, etc.
