As the inscription around its perimeter reads, this stamp honors Washington, District of Columbia, The Nation’s Capital. It was even oriented in the shape of a diamond mimicking the original 100 square mile diamond-shaped parcel allotted for the district.

What’s the best way to represent a large city like Washington DC on a postage stamp (which is practically synonymous with small)? Perhaps a portion of the original plan for the city by French army engineer Pierre L’Enfant? Or maybe the familiar view along the National Mall? Or how about some cherry blossoms or a typical neighborhood scene? Better yet, how about all of the above!

The row houses depicted on the stamp are found in the Shaw neighborhood north of the National Mall. The Shaw neighborhood was named for Colonel Robert Gould Shaw of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. Well, actually it’s named for the neighborhood’s junior high school which, in turn, was named for the Civil War colonel. I wonder if any of the folks who live here are aware that their house is on a postage stamp.
