Sasco, an acronym for the Southern Arizona Smelter Company, was a smelter town serving several surrounding mines in the Silver Bell mountains. It was established in 1908 at the completion of the smelter but was abandoned by 1921 due to changing copper prices and the devastating effect of the influenza epidemic. The buildings were mostly demolished by 1930. The Rockland Hotel remains the most prominent of the ruins in the town. It was built of basalt blocks with plaster applied to the interior walls. It was operated by Heimbach and Decker. Reviewing the remains today with the picture from pre-1921, it appears that much of the front section of the hotel has been demolished. Sadly, vandalism remains rampant in the area.
