The Freedom Tree was originally a 65-foot Norway spruce, when it was cut down to make room for expansions this partial truck was craved into this sculpture in 2015 by artist Jeff May. There are other sculptures made from other portions of the tree in downtown.

Coeur d’Alene’s Original Freedom Tree

Coeur d’Alene’s original “Freedom Tree” was initially
Planted to stop development on Tubbs Hill.
In October of 1972 it was rededicated as a Freedom Tree
After Captain Fred McMurray was shot down by the
North Vietnamese and was held as a Prisoner of War.
The additional plaque at the base of this carving was
Placed at the foot of the tree.
The original Freedom Tree was removed during the
McEuen Park renovation.
This carving is from the trunk of that tree.

The Freedom Tree

With the vision of universal freedom
For all mankind
this tree is dedicated to
Capt. Fred McMurray
And all
Prisoners of War
And
Missing in Action
